What is important for everyone at the workplace to note is that leave is an essential part of employment.  The Basic Conditions of Employment Act specifically requires each and every employee to take 21 consecutive days leave per annum.  This leave cannot be swapped for extra payment and cannot be denied.  The government in its wisdom has made the leave compulsory and although there is a common practice to not take leave and to take the money instead this is not acceptable for a whole lot of other reasons.  Clearly the illegality of not taking the leave is not fully understood but what must be understood is that working without leave would not only create an illegal situation but also would lead to illness.  All work and no play makes the employee “a dull child”.
